Efficient stoves
for returnees in Burundi
In Burundi, former refugees are being supported as they return to their homeland. In most cases, those returning have no possessions with them. The cooking methods traditionally used in Central Africa consume large quantities of fuel and produce a great deal of smoke, which can lead to adverse health effects such as respiratory diseases. The efficient stoves form part of an aid package distributed in reception camps by aid organisations such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the United Nations World Food Programme. The stoves ensure more complete combustion, thereby reducing air pollution, and also require less firewood, which helps to conserve forests.
